Beat the Heat This Summer

Sacramento summers can be brutal with most days reaching in the 100's from June through late September.  While parents want to stay home in the ac their kids want to do something fun on their school break. Stay cool this summer with these 10 family friendly activities in greater Sacramento area.  If you don't live near Sacramento, many other cities offer simular summer activities.

1.  Aerospace Museum of California

Located in North Highlands, CA this museum is a historic museum of old air plane both inside and out. Currently (through September 2017) they have a very special Da Vinci exhibit. I heard this exhibit is spectacular (I plan on checking it out soon).

2.  Go see a Movie for Free or low cost

Several movie theaters in the area offer $5 Tuesday specials, even the newly remodeled one near Arden Mall (which I am told has reclining seats).
Also Regal & Cinemark offer free or low cost movies on select days (typically they are movies many kids have already seen) but it's the experience what the kids are looking for.

3.  iFly Indoor Skydiving

Located right off 80 in Roseville is an indoor skydiving place.  After a safety lesson you are taken into a giant wind tunnel with and instructor to skydive for a couple minutes. I've seen videos and pictures of young kids even doing this! I need to get the courage up to give it a try too.

4.  Sacramento Valley Railroad Museum

Located in Hagan park in Rancho Cordova this isn't your typical museum. The first weekend of the month (for a small fee) you can ride a train around the park. With all the trees and being close to the river it is often 20 degrees cooler on hot days.

5.  Powerhouse Science Center

While the main exhibit is general hands on and geared for preschool/young elementary ages they do have a Planetarium and an animal rescue room.  They also offer camps and special programs for various age levels.

6.  Visit a community pool

Check the various park & rec in the area for the list of pools. Our favorite is Antelope Aquatics Center because they have several different pools to choose from including 2 giant water slides.

7.  Visit an Ice-cream shop

Visit your local icecream or frozen yogurt shop for a fun treat. One we recently discovered in Rocklin, CA is called Shave Monster and they serve a variety of fun different treats like "dragons breathe" which will certainly be a fun experience.

8.  Drycreek Park

Take a nature walk along the trails behind the park. And if you get hot you can cool off in the creek. CAUTION: With all the rain we had in 2017 the creek may be higher level than normal please watch your kids closely.
  9.  Bowling

Believe it or not but this is something many kids have never got to experience in this digital age.  There are a variety of bowling places all throughout the Greater Sacramento area. There is even a free bowling program you can sign up for here.

10.  Scandia Family Fun center

I think many locals have forgotten about this place as they drive past it on the freeway.  They offer a variety of things to from indoor video games, outdoors they have batting cages, mini golf and carnival rides.
